From the Pool to the Word: Aaliyah's Summer at Southwind
Aaliyah showed up to Southwind Camp this summer full of energy. She made friends fast, she was loud in the best way, and honestly — you could barely get her out of the pool or the lake.
But somewhere between the water and the worship set, something in her started to shift.
Our City Life KIX staff, Shaki, noticed it first during club time. Aaliyah started picking up the words to the worship songs — quietly at first, just mouthing along. By the end of the week, she wasn't mouthing along anymore. She was dancing, full out, arms up, all in.
Then came small groups. And that's where the real story started.
Aaliyah kept asking questions. Hard ones. The kind that tell you a kid isn't just going through the motions — she's actually wrestling with something. In a one-on-one conversation with Shaki and another YFC leader, Aaliyah opened up. She said she wished there was more proof that Jesus was real. She said she wanted to go to church. And she admitted something a lot of kids feel but rarely say out loud: the last time she said yes to Jesus, part of it was because everyone around her was saying yes too.
She wasn't looking for a script. She was looking for something real.
That night, she noticed Shaki reading her Bible during small groups.
"Where'd you get that?" Aaliyah asked.
When Shaki told her, Aaliyah said she wanted one of her own.
So with the help of another YFC leader, that's exactly what happened. Aaliyah got her very first Bible — a Bible that was hers, not borrowed, not assigned, hers. She hugged Shaki tight and immediately grabbed a pen. She wanted to write the date inside the cover, right then, so she'd never forget the day it became hers.
This is what a week at camp can do. Not because we hand kids easy answers — but because we give them the space to ask the hard questions, and someone who will sit with them while they figure it out.
Aaliyah's story isn't finished. She's just getting started, Bible in hand, still working through her doubts, still learning what it means to know Jesus for herself instead of borrowing someone else's yes.
