Marquis is Going to the Olympics!

Posted on by Bonnie Rodriguez

We met Marquis (B-boy Piccolo) at Miami YFC’s City Life KIX program when he was 12 years old. He was one of the only kids in his low-income neighborhood into break-dancing, so a KIX volunteer would drive him 45 minutes to-and-from Catalyst each week for our free breaking class.

Two years ago we started offering a breaking class in Homestead. Marquis showed up every week and trained on his own. Now, five years later, his hard work and dedication have paid off. For the first time ever, break-dancing has been added to the Youth Olympics and Marquis was one of eight males selected out of hundreds of applicants from all over the U.S. to go to the Youth Olympic Qualifier for the Americas in Philadelphia.

In October, Marquis flew (he was the first one in his family to ever fly!) with our break-dancing Director, Kevin, to Philadelphia. Thirty-two males from different countries in the Americas competed, and Marquis was one of four selected to go to the next stage in Japan. If selected in Japan, he would represent the USA in the 2018 Youth Olympics.

What’s even better, though, is that Marquis met Jesus at Youth for Christ!  In addition to his dancing skills, he’s an outspoken and growing Christian. We couldn’t be more proud of Marquis. Thank you for making it possible for kids like Marquis to have a place where they can develop their talents by supporting Catalyst!
